Nationalism- Europe after the Congress of Vienna saw waves of nationalism sweeping across the continent. Nationalist movements brought the Italian speakers together to form a modern day Italy in the mid 19th century, while other empires struggled to barely maintain control over the many different peoples living within their borders.

Austro-Hungarian Empire

The Hapsburg Family ruled much of the European continent from Austria, to Spain & the Spanish Netherlands at one time. After being the strongest ruling family in Europe, their power finally began to wane for a combination of things. The rise of England to power under Henry IV and his daughter Elizabeth I caused the Hapsburg considerable anguish. The defeat King Phillip II's Spanish Armada by the British queen in 1588 sealed the fate for the Hapsburg's decline. In the early 1800s, you will recall that Prince Klemens Von Metternich held the Congress of Vienna to return Europe back to the conditions previous to the French Revolution. Metternich was a member of the Hapsburg clan and wanted Europe's Old Order restored. The Austrian crown for reasons of self-preservation would have many changes to make in order to survive into the next century.

French view of Bismarck

"Prussia must build up and preserve her strength for the favorable moment which has already come and gone many times. Her borders under the treaties of Vienna are not favorable to the healthy existence of the state. The great questions of the day will not be settled by speeches and majority decisions—that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849—but by blood and iron."

—Otto Von Bismarck, quoted in The Origins of the Wars of German Unification, by William Carr
